Sitting proudly in the triumvirate of major export products alongside pineapples and medical devices, bananas play an indispensable role in Costa Rica’s economic landscape. With a staggering contribution of ¢393.699 million to Costa Rica’s GDP in 2020, the banana industry stands as a testament to the country’s agricultural prowess.
Delving Into History: The Journey of Bananas in Costa Rica
The history of banana cultivation in Costa Rica can be traced back to the latter part of the 19th century. The coastal province of Limón emerges as the epicenter of banana cultivation, with a majority of its cantons indulging in this profitable venture. Out of the 10 cantons in Costa Rica that have taken to banana production, an impressive six hail from Limón.
Limón’s Bananarama: Leading the Pack in Production
Matina, a canton in Limón, has earned the distinction of being the country’s top earner from banana cultivation. Responsible for producing a significant 29% of Costa Rica’s bananas, Matina reigns supreme. Not far behind, Siquirres, another Limón canton, generated an enviable revenue of ¢78.229 million, followed closely by Pococí with its substantial ¢60.315 million banana yield.
Breaking the Limón-centric trend, Sarapiquí, a canton outside of Limón, secured the fourth spot, contributing ¢46.419 million to the nation’s coffers.
Distribution of Banana Cultivation Across Provinces
While Limón undeniably remains the heart of banana cultivation, other provinces like Puntarenas and Heredia also partake in this activity. However, provinces such as San José, Alajuela, Cartago, and Guanacaste remain devoid of banana plantations.
