The Institute of Alajuela, once a reputable educational institution, is now grappling with a surge in drug-related incidents and violence. The prevailing issues are creating a hostile environment for students and staff, necessitating urgent intervention.
Alarming Incidents of Violence and Drug Abuse
The school’s bathrooms have become hotspots for aggression, with video evidence showing students engaging in violent altercations. However, the protection of minors prevents teachers from intervening directly in these locations. In one extreme incident, a student had a knife held to his throat, prompting his parents to seek assistance from the Juvenile Criminal Prosecutor’s Office.
Drug-related issues are also escalating. Drugs and associated paraphernalia are confiscated daily, only for more to appear the following day. The ease with which drugs are circulated within the school’s premises is a major cause for concern.
Threats of Shootings: A New Level of Fear
Adding to the sense of insecurity, the Institute of Alajuela is one of three schools that suspended classes due to shooting threats. An audio message circulated suggesting armed boys were targeting a specific student and anyone wearing the school’s uniform.
Criticism of Inaction from School Leadership
The escalating issues have prompted complaints from parents, students, and teachers, who feel the school’s director isn’t taking sufficient measures to address these problems. In response to these criticisms, the director has deferred all comments to the regional director.
Proposed Measures for Improved Security
In a bid to curb the ongoing issues, the Board is being petitioned to repair and acquire additional metal detectors. Plans are also underway to conduct drills to prepare students and staff for potential shooting incidents. Furthermore, janitors will be tasked with increased vigilance near bathrooms, combining their cleaning duties with a surveillance role.
