Can energy from the sea be the wave of the future for Costa Rica? We shall see because buoys and satellites are going to be used in a monitoring system to collect information about the possibility.
The Costa Rica Electricity Institute (ICE) is working with a company called Offshore Wind Consultants on this project in the North Pacific. The studies have to do with the use of energy produced by wind on the high seas.
The companies are preparing the terms and schedule as well as reviewing data to plan marine and coastal infrastructure for these offshore wind farms. ICE’s Electricity manager, Robero Quirós, explained, “The study will make it possible to know with certainty the country’s potential for the future development of new renewable generation technologies, including all dimensions, from technical to socio-environmental.”
Theoretically, there is a potential of 14 gigawatts. If confirmed, this offshore wind energy could become the sixth clean source for the electrical matrix, which is also fed by hydro, wind (on land), solar, geothermal, and biomass sources.
