The purchase of farms in Costa Rica for Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán is not currently under investigation but may be investigated in the future for drug trafficking and money laundering.
The country came up a couple of times in the trial against El Chapo in the United States. The star witness, Alexánder Cifuentes Villa, revealed that the most powerful drug dealer in Mexico bought properties here to facilitate trafficking to the U.S.
Cifuentes referred to himself as El Chapo’s secretary, his right hand and his left hand. They were transporting cocaine from Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia through Costa Rica and Honduras.
The General Directorate of Migration and Immigration reported that Cifuentes is not in the National Registry and his name does not appear as related to any company. He has no reported income in the country over the last 18 years.
