18 municipalities are going to offer a plan that forgives the fines and interest on back taxes. Delinquent taxpayers will sign up to pay off the principal debt in a period of six months in exchange for not having to pay the accumulated fees and interest.
San Jose is one of the municipalities offering this. It applies to real estate taxes as well as services such as water and garbage collection. This tax amnesty is available in 18 of 81 municipalities but more could offer it in the future.
This is based on a law that was passed in October. The point is to allow the municipalities a way to collect a large sum of money in a short time and put it to use in cantonal development projects.
You can also save a percentage of the fees and interest on other debts by using amnesty plans available with the General Tax Office, the General Directorate of Customs, the Rural Development Institute, the Municipal Development and Advisory Institute and the Joint Institute of Social Assistance.
