Costa Rica Travel – A private consortium, CEPP Consultants LLC, has offered an investment of $50 million to transform the port of Quepos to attract large cruise ships.
The Board of Directors of the Costa Rican Institute of Pacific Ports (Incop) will analyze the proposal next week.
The proposal includes the demolition of the current structure, constructing a new port, improving the breakwater, creating boat repairs, dredging and building port stores, restaurants, cafeterias, banking agencies, basic medical services and sales stalls. It also includes facilitating navigation with equipment, guides, and technical and logistical support for large ships.
These interventions would be made with the idea of attracting cruises with 3,000 passengers. This would bring to the area a higher demand for tours, restaurants, hotels and souvenirs.
During last year’s cruise season, 101,258 tourists entered through the pacific port. Each spends an average of $80 per day during their stay in Costa Rica. In the 2018-19 cruise season, 224,000 passengers are expected to arrive in Limón.
