Between three car agencies, Grupo Q, Danissa Group and BMW, there are a total of 64 electric cars stuck in Customs. This is six months after the law exempted electric vehicles from taxes.
Costa Ricans have shown interest in this type of transport since the beginning. The procedures keeping the cars locked up, however, deter others from trying to purchase them.
The exemption should have been applicable from the time it was published. Those eagerly awaiting the cars have had to wait from when the law was passed until it was published and then wait another period for the exoneration to be applied.
They are still waiting because the TICA system (Information Technology for Customs Control) is not updated to process data about electric cars. There is no way to put in zero as the tax. There is still not even an estimate as to when the needed adjustments can be implemented.
