Costa Rica News – Nicaraguan migrants lined up to demonstrate in front of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights at the time the president and secretary general would arrive.
They were to appear there in honor of the 40th anniversary of the court.
They hoped that President Carlos Alvarado would hear their cry. What they ask for is help from the president, specifically that he declare a state of emergency in the country in order to assist Nicaraguans fleeing the crisis happening in their country.
Thousands of Nicaraguans are illegally crossing the border with Costa Rica because they cannot wait in hopes of a visa being approved. They are trying to save their lives. Hundreds are already here and in precarious conditions because they fled with next to nothing.
Nicaragua’s clashes between government forces, oppositionists and paramilitary groups have gone on for three months, leaving 270 people dead. Visa and refugee applications to Costa Rica have increased substantially and the authorities are preparing to open shelters.
