Costa Rica News – On April 4th, a family got the good news that they could officially adopt their daughter. The strange part of the story is that the daughter in question was already biologically theirs.
You see, the woman was unable to bear children because after suffering from cancer it became necessary to take out her uterus. The couple found a surrogate in the strangest of places, the woman’s mom.
Although 55-years-old, the woman agreed to take on the risks of a second pregnancy and carry her own daughter’s daughter to be. They faced some challenges, of course. People looked at the older woman funny when she, pregnant, went to buy prenatal vitamins.
Doctors were able to give the young mother treatment in order to produce breast milk and she fed the child that she made and her mother carried.
There is no rule regulating such cases in Costa Rica nor one prohibiting them. At first, the birth was registered with the baby carrying her grandparents last names and it appeared in the registry that her biological mother was her sister. Ultimately, it was demonstrated that the rights of the intentional parents and the freedom of the pregnant woman and the best interest of the baby girl were protected and the “adoption” finalized. Now she carries the last names of her biological parents instead of her grandmother/surrogate. The grandmother said she always felt like her grandmother and recognized the motherhood of her daughter.
