Costa Rica News – I know this is probably a good idea but would I have confidence in a structure built to protect me from a volcano eruption by the Costa Rican government if they are unable to even construct decent roads? Probably not….
The Ministry of Health has given its approval to construct shelters near Poas that will serve to protect the public should there be an eruption. The National Commission of Emergencies has demanded these as a requirement to reopen access to the volcano.
SINAC says that the work will begin next week. They will create five concrete structures to protect visitors in the case of an eruption with solid materials, like the one that caused the closure of the national park over a year ago.
The Municipality of Poas doesn’t need to sign off. It is just informed of the technical information of the works. The approval from the Ministry of Health was the last of various permissions needed. Now everything is in order.
The construction should take about six weeks. In addition to building the shelters, other things had to be done before reopening. Infrastructure of paths and rails was readied. Training for emergency preparedness was carried out to protected area officials, tourism guides and inhabitants of surrounding communities.
