Costa Rica Entertainment – The 120th anniversary of the National Theater, which is a monument to the progress of the Republic, is this year.
The architecture, as well as ornamentation, is an allegory to our political system and the models of economic and cultural development assumed by the liberal Costa Rican State.
October 7th marked 127 years since the approval of the first plans of the National Theater. The construction of the National Thete was coordinated by the General Directorate of Public Works and a citizens’ board created by the Government.
The architect Guillermo Reitz and engineer Nicolás Chavarría designed it. Much of the internal ornamentation was subcontracted to a team of Italian artists.
The theater followed French and German architectural trends.
The Greco-Roman architectural language used links the work to nineteenth century democracy and republicanism.
The ornaments also show consecration to the fine arts, music dance and portraits.
