Costa Rica News – Counterfeit brand clothing is on the rise in Costa Rica. Most of it comes from China but some is made right here.
Over the past 3 years only one conviction has been achieved, however.
Last week a raid was carried out in seven stores in San Jose. All of them have clothes that, from a distance, appear to be trademarked correctly.
Even up close, many wouldn’t question the originality of the pieces.
You will know if you are buying a fake because of the low price, below what is usually charged for a garment from that brand. Many fall for thinking they are getting a bargain when really they are getting ripped off.
The Judicial Investigation Agency reports an average of five complaints per month, coming from the companies harmed by this crime against intellectual property.
Those selling fakes are subject to five years of imprisonment.
