Costa Rica News – The firm Open Signal, which assesses the quality of mobile networks, has found Costa Rica to be the second worst in the world only followed by Afghanistan.
Their research in Costa Rica was based off of 822,000 users who installed Open Signal on their phones.
Having internet since 1993, Costa Rica was at one time the world leader. In recent years, Costa Rica’s status has fallen to the equivalent of an underdeveloped country.
South Korea leads the world in mobile networks with astounding speeds of 43.3 megabits per second (Mbps).
Kolbi, Costa Rica’s Electricity Institute, averaged 1.2 Mbps, although claiming to offer 3 Mbps. Between Kolbi, Movistar and Claro, the average speed was 2.5, Claro being the best of the three options. Amongst other Latin American countries, we see speeds between 6.1 and 9.1 Mbps.
Rosalia Morales, executive director of NIC Costa Rica, stated “Costa Rica has a high penetration of mobile Internet but little fixed Internet.
With this disparity, the mobile Internet is saturated and offers poor quality connections.”
