Costa Rica News – Cartago’s María Auxiliadora Church has restored its image over two separate restorations.
She recovered her 100 year old beauty.
Some parts of the church were built before the 1910 earthquake and others after much of it was destroyed in the disaster.
The first restoration was in 2010, when a ¢100 million prize went to the restoration of four facades and exterior corridors. At this time the main tower and turrets were restructured and the roof and gutters partially repaired.
For the second restoration, ¢150 million was invested in restoring both the external structure and internal elements. The internal cedar wood structure was given a special treatment to restore it to its original appearance.
The marble altar was restored and the mosaic floor cleaned well, although it had already been kept in good condition.
Doors, window frames, the ceiling, arches and ornaments were also worked on.
