Costa Rica News – The Ministry of Health has recommended that pregnant women avoid zika virus by not travelling to countries that present the disease.
Zika can cause a range of problems to the mother and baby.
If you are currently expecting or planning to become pregnant do not travel to Brazil, Barbados, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, French Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, Suriname or Venezuela.
The list of countries experiencing Zika has doubled in under two months. Costa Rica has not had reported cases of the virus but officials are prepared to meet the disease if it makes its way here.
Zika is transmitted through mosquito bites so pregnant women should take care to cover skin with long sleeves, pants, hats, etc., use sleep nets, and use insect repellent that is approved by the Ministry of Health.
Families with pregnant women should be especially careful to use screens or keep windows closed as well as to empty any container that collects water.
