Entertainment News -The harrowing survival epic “The Revenant” leads the Oscar race with 12 nominations, including best picture.
The acclaimed film also scored nods for star Leonardo DiCaprio, director Alejandro González Iñárritu and supporting actor Tom Hardy. Iñárritu nabbed three Oscars last year for “Birdman.”
The high-octane action thriller “Mad Max: Fury Road” followed with 10 nominations, including best picture.
“The Martian,” Ridley Scott’s sci-fi adventure with Matt Damon, racked up seven nominations, including best picture.
The best picture field also includes the financial-meltdown saga “The Big Short,” the coming-of-age tale “Brooklyn,” the wrenching character study “Room,” the Cold War-era thriller “Bridge of Spies” and the journalism docu-drama “Spotlight.”
“Carol,” a lesbian romance set in the 1950s, and “Straight Outta Compton,” a biopic about the hip-hop group N.W.A., were shut out of the best picture race. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” also failed to land a spot in the top category, but it was recognized for various technical achievements.
The acting categories were, for the second year in a row, populated entirely by white performers. Michael B. Jordan, celebrated for his lead role in the Rocky reboot “Creed,” was one notable omission.
