Costa Rica News & Events – Yesterday, the streets were overtaken by oxen and their owners creating a gorgeous parade.
The group of hundreds went through La Sabana and along Paseo Colon and Second Avenue.
The people dressed in typical costumes and danced through the streets posing for many pictures. The oxen pulled multicolored carts behind them. Children waved from the caravans.
Oxherding is an ancient art that includes breeding and caring for the animals. It also encompasses the colorful craftsmanship of the wagon and yoke and the use of specific tools.
The oxen and ox herding families have been celebrated annually at this parade, ever since the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization declared the tradition part of oral and intangible human heritage.
