Costa Rica News – For us living on the Central Pacific this is great news as perhaps we will not have as much polluted water running into the ocean around us.
The new water treatment plant in San Jose, has been successfully processing the water of 120,000 residents for the past two weeks.
This means that the water is no longer falling into the Torres River untreated.
There are greater plans for the water treatment plant that are in the process of being carried out. The goal is that the plant can serve a million users over 11 counties in the Central Valley.
The proposed date of completion for the tunnel that will carry water to the treatment plant is June 2016. The creation of 400 kilometers of sewers will prevent 38 tons of waste from entering the rivers.
Treating water in Costa Rica would be a great step for the country’s environmentally friendly efforts.
At this point, a mere 4% of water is filtered before it enters natural bodies of water such as rivers and seas.

La planta es parte del proyecto de Mejoramiento Ambiental del Área Metropolitana de San José que lleva a cabo Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AyA) y se espera que con ella se puedan tratar las aguas residuales de un millón de residentes de once cantones del Valle Central: San José, Desamparados, Goicoechea, Alajuelita, Escazú, Vázquez de Coronado, Tibás, Moravia, Montes de Oca, Curridabat y La Unión.
