Costa Rica News – Teen pregnancy is a serious problem around the world and this includes Costa Rica. The Ministry of Public Education is hoping to try to educate students in order to reduce the large number of teen pregnancies in Costa Rica.
The Ministry of Public Education is looking into the program used to teach kids in fifth grade through high school about sexuality. The experts at the National Children’s Hospital have suggested the coverage be extended.
This program detects at risk students as well as improves relationships and gets rid of taboos. A greater respect for sexual diversity has come about due to this program. It has also resulted in a decrease in teen pregnancies.
A survey was done that showed that 47% of teenagers view pornography, a habit that starts at age 10-12, which can produce aggressive sexual behavior. Another study showed that only 21% knew when increased risk of pregnancy occurs during the menstrual cycle.
Misinformation about sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy is not the only thing the program seeks to correct. It focuses on both biological science and human rights issues related to sex.
MEP is looking into how to make the program even better. Parents will be presented with the content that their children will be exposed to.
