Costa Rica Travel News – You may have been told by your travel agent that it’s simply not possible to go to Tortuguero in a single day, but that is not correct. In fact, you can be taken there and back in a day, with enough time to tour the town, beach and canals.
The one day tour starts with a pickup from your hotel in San Jose. A bilingual naturalist guide will be with you. You drive past various types of plantations, including coffee, banana and papaya. You will see the Braulio Carrillo National Park, which is a beautiful forest with many waterfalls on the sides of the road. Keep an eye out for wildlife, and your guide may stop along the road to let you get out and take pictures of a sloth or another animal.
There is a stop for breakfast and then another short drive. Then you transfer to your boat and the canal tour begins. You may see caymans, blue morpho butterflies, toucans, spider monkeys, white faced monkeys, agoutis, turtles and more. You will notice at least three different colors of water in the various canals. If you keep your eye out you can spot a ton of birds.
When you get to Tortuguero there is a walking tour of the town’s major attractions and the beach. You will learn about the culture, turtles and history of the area. After this, you will go by boat to a restaurant for a nice lunch.
At about 3:30 you will return home, starting in the canals. There will be a rest stop along the way. If you are looking to just go one way and stay in Tortuguero overnight, that is also possible. The cost for the transfer is $17 and the cost for the two way trip with the tour and meals is $99. This trip can easily be added to any Costa Rican itinerary.
