Costa Rica News – This is a program that can grow teeth in Costa Rica. Getting something back for your recycling efforts might just work.
As it stands recycling is finally coming to the San Jose greater metropolitan area, and in a really interesting way. There are already five machines which will be found in shopping centers and will give out points for each plastic bottle or aluminum can recycled.
These points can be redeemed at participating stores in the form or discounts or gifts. The participating businesses are CCM Cinemas, Optical Vision, Florida Bebidas, Subway, Garper and Tukis.
The five machines can be found in the San Pedro Mall, Paseo de las Flores, Real Cariari, Metropoli and Multiplaza. The machines are smart, meaning they can sort plastic from aluminum before compressing the bottles and cans. The only requirement is that you must take the lid off before depositing the bottle. There is a separate place on the box for depositing the caps.
This program was designed to reward shoppers for caring for the environment by not throwing recyclable packaging into the trash. The idea started as a way to raise awareness and educate people on the need to recycle.
The positive reinforcement is an extra bonus.
