Costa Rica News – 200 families in the Vila del Lago condos in en El Coyol de Alajuela, Costa Rica are suffering under the uncertainty of whether or not they will be evicted from their homes. This concern follows an order by the Ministry of Health, demanding that a new wastewater treatment plant be installed in the community.
That plant would cost about $800,000 to complete, and the owners’ lawyers are fighting the issue in court. It could go on for about a year in court, but eventually the condos will be shut down if the issue is not taken care of. The Ministry of Health threatened to declare the entire condominium complex uninhabitable if Akary Grupo Vila doesn’t build the sewage plant by July of this year.
It all started when neighbors started complaining about terrible smells coming from the complex, specifically garages. The residents are mad because all construction has been stopped by law and they are not receiving any updates about what is going on, yet they are still making payments on their condos. “We feel cheated,” said one resident.
The project manager, David Segura, said, “It has always been a priority to develop condominiums that adhere to the law. We can not advance the construction until we have the permits.”
The issue of what amount the Akary Grupo Vila will have to pay residents for damages has not yet been decided. It’s still in debate, but the Constitutional Court ordered that damages are to be paid to them.
