Humpback Whales come to the area known as the “Whales Tail” near Uvita, Costa Rica twice yearly. They travel down from the Arctic, arriving in December to April, while those coming from the Antarctic can be seen from early July to late October. The whales come for romance and baby-making, and return to give birth in the relative safety of the Costa Rican coastal waters. Calves are born swimming, and most are immediately aware of the presence of their mothers and the pod around them.Costa Rica offers the longest humpback whale watching season in the world.
Ideal conditions for the humpbacks breeding and calving exist in an area in the Pacific ocean stretching from Playa Dominical in Costa Rica down to the Panamanian border. This area is known as ”The Costa Rican Thermal Convection Dome”, and it features a shallow layer of warm water that lies on top of low-oxygen, cold water, creating the perfect ecosystem for thriving marine life.
