Costa Rica News & Events – A rigorous foot race is going to occur in the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The Coastal Challenge will be one of the toughest of the races in the adventure racing circuit, putting runners on a 236 kilometer course that goes from the coast, to the jungle and mountains and back to the shore.
The race will take place in February. In the last edition, the runners went from Quepos to the Savegre Valley, covering 34 kilometers and making an ascent of 850 meters. The next day they descended to Dominical and continued to beautiful beaches and mountains, including Ventanas, Coronado, Palmar Sur, Sierpe, and Drake Bay.
The route was gorgeous and grueling. It reminded participants of the Ruta of the Conquistadores and the Adventure Race World Championships. This year’s course goes along the Pacific coastline and curves into the Talamanca mountain range. It finishes in a fishing village near the Panamanian border. The village was only accessible by boat, until recently.
In addition to beach, jungle, and rainforest trails, the runners will cross rocky outcroppings, reefs, river, and estuary crossings. This year is special, because it is the 10th anniversary. The high-endurance and adventure international community will be celebrating.
