Costa Rica News – After a break of 14 days, the vehicle restriction in regards to license plate numbers in San José returns Monday.The Government suspended the restrictions on Monday the 23rd December due to the start of the holidays for public sector of government, both Christmas and the new year.
With the resumption of the restriction s regarding license plate numbers, private vehicles can not enter San Jose 
Central once a week, between 6 am and 7 pm.
If you license plates end in the following numbers you are not allowed to drive into San Jose on the days:
- 1 & 2 Monday
- 3 & 4 Tuesday
- 5 & 6 Wednesday
- 7 & 8 Thursday
- 9 & 0 Friday
The restricted zone includes the area from the building near the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (AyA) in Pavas to the facilities of the National Roads Authority (Cosevi) in La Uruca, to the entrances to Cinco Esquinas, Calle Blancos and Coca Cola.
It also includes la Bandera y la Fountain of la Hispanidad,the round about in las Garantías Sociales, theWal-Mart of San Sebastián and the entrance to los Hatillos.
Don’t ask me where those places are as we all know directions in Costa Rica are a bit lacking but I think it is near the the old tree where the gas station used to be across from the yellow house. My suggestion is if you are driving and you need to head to San Jose on a day when your number has been restricted jump in a taxi or just wait until the next day. Manana is an acceptable time to reschedule a meeting.
There will also be surveillance at points at the entry to San Jose to make sure vehicles are carrying their 2014 Marchamo.
Drivers who do not have their renewed Marchamo will be subject to a fine of about $94 and the removal of you vehicle’s plates, the first time.
Just thought about this….do you know how much money could be made by the Costa Rica both in traffic fines, lawyer fees, and payoffs to local transitos if they changed the days of the restriction like once a month? Just thinking out loud.
