Costa Rica Travel News – Toucan & Tarpon Lodge offers a private, peaceful rainforest getaway that is both completely off the grid and only a two minute water taxi ride away from the village of Tortuguero. You can enjoy the turtle tours on the village’s beach, the great restaurants like Budda Cafe, try some rice and beans made with coconut, and pick up souvenirs like artistic T-Shirts and intricate jewelry.
Afterwards, you can escape from the noisy bars to your own paradise. The three cabins are found on a 5 acre eco-friendly reserve that has solar power and their own fresh well water. It’s just across the river from the town but far enough away that all you will hear are the sounds of nature, allowing you to recharge for your next day of adventure at sea or exploring the national park.
Your relaxing jungle retreat will never have more than six guests at a time, so you will have personalized attention from the wonderful host, Sue. She is extremely friendly and willing to help you out in any way she can. She was up at 5am to help us get a water taxi. Sue knows a lot and is open and ready to chat with you about what’s available in the area. She can connect you with certified guides who can teach you about the process of giant sea turtle (230 kg) nesting and hatching or take you through the various canals. Sue is a great cook, too. Inquire about packages that include meals.
If you prefer to cook your own things, the price includes use of a shared, well-stocked kitchen. There is also a splash pool and yoga studio that you have access to. The cabins each fit two guests. They are breezy with lots of windows. They are complete with ensuite bathrooms and Guatemalan textile decor. Just behind the cabins are private trails, which local guides say are better than the ones in the national park!
You can easily spend the whole day exploring the nature in this intimate setting, relaxing in a hammock, and taking the canoe out for a ride. At night, make sure to walk down by the dock to see the beauty of the lights from the village reflecting on the moving water as boats pass by.
Bird watchers will feel right at home at this lodge. All at one time you may see ten toucans, six aracaris, and twelve Montezuma oropendolas. There is a wealth of other amazing wildlife. Other creatures you may encounter include the group of 15 howler monkeys that pass by about every other day, iguanas, porcupines, lizards, parrots, and beautiful butterflies. If you look closely while exploring the garden and trails you will discover a whole world of interesting wildlife.
Captain Jeff has 20 years of experience leading fishing trips. Most recently, he owned and operated a fishing hotel in Northern Canada. He now takes groups out on the Tortuguero River and the Caribbean Sea to search for tarpon, mackerel, jack crevalle, red snapper, green jacks, snook, fat snook, mojarra, and barracuda. The boat is a 28 foot fiberglass panga named “Sabaloco” that has 2 Suzuki 115 outboard motors for your safety. The name comes from the Spanish term for tarpon, “sabalo” and the word for crazy, “loco,” because they are crazy about tarpon. It can fit up to four fishermen. Tarpon are regularly found in the waters between Rio Parismina and Nicaragua and they are fun to catch. After battling for hours, Jeff recently caught a 200 pound silver king.
The general rates for cabins are $30 for single occupancy and $40 for double occupancy. Ask about long term rates. The owners are also able to set up an airport pickup for you, a hotel in the city for your first night, and either shuttle or domestic air transportation to get to Tortuguero. The basic daily rate for fishing with double occupancy on the boat and a stay of two nights with one full day of fishing is $500 per person. If there are people in your group who would like to go out with the fishermen but not fish the cost would be $75 per day. Many packages are available for longer stays or larger groups. For example, for four fishermen sharing two cabins for 8 nights with 7 full days of fishing, the cost would be $2,050 per person.
