Costa Rica News – For everyone that spends much of the year in the Guanacaste area of Costa Rica, this is great news for you…..especially for those early morning showers during dry season.
During the dry season, people in Guanacaste often have to go without water for periods of time. This problem affects the whole region, as it is the driest one in the country. The National Groundwater, Irrigation, and Drainage of Costa Rica (Senara) announced that a project is in the works that will create a reservoir in the area that will provide drinking water to 350 thousand homes throughout the year, including during the dry season. It can also be used for irrigation.
It’s going to be made throughout 21 farms that currently raise livestock in the canton of Abangares. They have a stone block below them that will prevent the water from leaking. The project involves more studies before it can be done. The cost of the studies and preparations will be 100 million colones over two years. There are times when Guanacaste’s current well water supply is not enough, so its an important project, worth the investment! Some of the studies include projections of how much water will be needed as tourism grows over the next decade.
The best part is that a river is not needed to keep the reservoir full. According to the plans, ICE will provide Senara 80 meters of water cubed per second from Lake Arenal during the dry season. Its a very eco-friendly solution to this problem caused by climate change. The health of the people in Guanacaste will benefit greatly from this project.
