San Jose, Costa Rica – Over 61% of professors believe they have little preparation for this subject. This seems odd to me considering almost all teachers will have had a baby by the time they started teaching based on the numbers that 20% of women have a baby by the time they are 19. If a student raises his hand in class and asked a question about sexuality, the teacher might be dumbfounded.
Many teachers do not feel well armed to answer the questions that the students have on this issue.
This is one of the conclusions of an investigation by the National Institute for the Study of Children and Adolescents of the National University.
When asked about the preparation that has to provide sex education, 70.9% of teachers described it as poor.
Only 4.1% of high school teachers say they have a lot of training to address these issues in the classroom, while in primary the numbers were just 5.2%.
This situation occurs despite the fact that 87% of people think that schools should assume the delicate task of teaching about sexuality.
The results of this study justified the proposal on sex education developed by the Institute, at the request of the Ministry of Public Education (MEP).
These curricula were approved last week by the Higher Education Council, and will be taught from next academic year in seventh, eighth and ninth school.
Ana Teresa Leon of the Institute, said it is urgent to provide sex education in schools and colleges, but to do so, educators must be trained.
“The proposal to introduce sex education has a very comprehensive project guidance of life and love, relationships and values,” said Leon.
The researcher also believes that this issue must be addressed as early as primary school.
“They strip the school completely unarmed, without information on sex education, no training in values, without any approach they want to be them, they like the war, especially the girls who are more developed by their 7th grade year,” said Leon.
The lack of teacher training was evident in the National Survey of Sexual and Reproductive Health.
According to this, the main source of information that are girls aged 15 to 19 years for issues related to sexuality are moms (33%), followed by teachers (17%).
What the MEP seeks is that in the classroom the teachers and students to speak without censorship on these issues.

This is excellent news! As I have posted in previous articles it is my position that this would fall into the realms of Catholicism and its failure to compete with modern day science. Costa Rica like other Latin american countries still adhere to simplistic means of morale thinking and in doing this are unable to comprehend correctly the progressing standards of scientific thinking. Christianity has evolved much whereas the Catholic religion has not.Sex education is all about the human anatomy and its makeup. This should be a vital teaching element in every society. I am ecstatic to see the government making a positive stride towards a quality future for today’s Tico youth. Thumbs up Costa Rica!
Chris,
Please, I beg you to use your time to LEARN Spanish, live the culture for a number of years before you make unfounded jugements. You are reading articles that are as unfounded as your comments. Remember that I am a teacher with plenty of teaching experience in both, private and public sectors, and in both countries. Remember that dad also has had enough experience in education in the New Castle area in DE. We both believe that the education system in Costa Rica is as good as the one in USA, except for some areas (same as Costa Rica!)
We love you, but you need to stop this nonsense and get busy learning SPANISH!!
Mom & Dad.
Gina,
This article was translated from Costa Rica’s, La Nacion newspaper. Private education in Costa Rica is decent but the public school system needs more teachers to educate the growing number of students. There are good teachers but from speaking to people that are in this sector many are under trained. You would be one of only a few both parents and teachers that thinks the education system in CR does not have a long way to go. Also with 1 out of 5 girls having a child by the time they are 19, sex ed is a very important addition to the curriculum.
Admin,
The schools in USA have just as many problems as the schools in CR. The pregnancy rate in the USA would probably be as high or higher than CR if it wouldn’t be for the very questionable organization, Plant Parenthood which pretty much give abortions on demand. Please do not believe everything you read, as you might know, there are plenty of articles writen for political purposes, and are designed to mislead people
I do not have any more time to waist in this kind of activity. It seems very unproductive and misleading.
Thank you and have a nice day.
I have no problem with you believing that the CR education system is up to any type standards, but by your grammatical and spelling errors in your comments it does not seem so. By the way it is Planned Parenthood. Thanks for coming and reading.
