Reasons to NOT Live in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica News – A move to Central America is perfect for many expat families and retirees. Those who move here often have searched for a place that’s somewhat bilingual, where they could get residency and property, somewhere they could enjoy stunning natural beauty, and most of all somewhere safe.

There are pros and cons to each Central American country, of course. Let’s look at Costa Rica, for example. There are some reasons why you wouldn’t want to move to Costa Rica.

For one, it’s way too touristy. If you are looking to be away from tourists or people in your home country this might not be the place for you.  There are some nice secluded areas where you might be able to re-invent yourself and get away from it all, but if you go to the larger developed areas you will see many tourists. It does, however, give you the chance to meet and hook up with travelling singles with no strings attached if that interests you.

Another reason is that the prices for everything are much higher than in the U.S. Many items have to be imported and thus are subject to taxes and transportation fees that increase their retail value.

Some towns are over-run by expats. These towns could easily be mistaken for an upscale village in the States. You can only imagine how much higher the prices are in a town like that. the other side of the coin on this argument is you will be able to get by in many of these places never learning Spanish.  You will find the “gringo tax” is usually in full effect in these areas though.

All that being said, there are also reasons you should move to Costa Rica. There are still wild areas to explore. Not every piece of jungle has been turned into a hotel. There’s a lot of protected land to enjoy. Wildlife flourishes in Costa Rica. Chances are there will be some hummingbirds living in your backyard. Your neighbors will be tropical plants, amazing animals, and friendly people.
