Costa Rica News – Well you are in Costa Rica and you want to ship some coffee or some other item found within the borders of the land of “Pura Vida”, and you ask yourself how can I get this to my friend in the USA or Europe. Obviously you are not shipping a container of it so you want to find a way to get it in their hands and the least expensive cost.
Like in the USA, the price of sending parcels from Costa Rica to other countries varies based on things like weight, taxable value and urgency.
Mauricio Rojas, commercial manager Correos de Costa Rica, explained that they have a direct service that enables the delivery of goods within 48 to 72 hours to any destination.
“For a kilo (2.2 pounds) the price is ¢ 16,500 or about $33 and includes shipping and a bar code number to track the shipment on the Internet,” he explained.
If you are not looking to get it shipped urgently you can pay ¢ 11,000 or about $22 for the same weight for a delivery taking 10 to 15 days to reach the destination country.
Finally you can you can send the package by regular mail with a cost of ¢ 8540 or about $17. This usually take about a month to arrive at the destination and there is no tracking. I myself do not recommend this as things can get taken in the regular mail system and without a tracking code you have no idea where it is.
The general manager of DHL Express Costa Rica, Allan Rabbit, did not reveal their rates but said they will calculate for each individual parcel the rate for export.
60% of the loads that are sent out of the country are to the United States, 20% to the European Union and the rest of Asia and Oceania.
Correos de Costa Rica also monitors the cargo security. It goes through an X-ray scanner for determining whether the goods they are scanning is the same what is being declared as they are exporting. The member airlines have their own systems.
For perishable products, customers can get training on the most appropriate type of packaging and the amount of time it takes to reach the final destination.
