Costa Rica News – Do the citizens of Costa Rica ever wonder what their tax dollars are paying for when it comes to when it comes to the work their “representatives” are doing? Proposing and passing bills that give’s a day of recognition or holiday to something or someone!!! When I think about it this IS what Costa Ricans want……the potential for less work days.
That’s right in the last 12 years, the Congress in Costa Rica created 23 bills to declare a “national day” of “something” or “someone”. Woo Hoo. I propose the national day of the beach so everyone can go to the beach……oh wait that is every Friday for Costa Ricans.
From the day of the shoemakers to the day of the librarian the day of the pencil and more,these holidays range for everyone of every sex, age, and occupation to every inanimate object.
The legislative chairman, Victor Emilio Granados said that these proposals come to meet the need of some members of Congress to leave their “footprint”. So in other words they can say that they were the one that proposed and passed the day of the hot dog or working girl. I am sorry I cannot write this without laughing.
“This bill usually pas very easily, because usually are not many major obstacles,” he added. Go figure that Costa Ricans will approve potential holidays quickly. Actually it is is because Congressmen do not want their proposed day of recognition to be declined.
However, or a bill like this, it requires same procedures as any major bill that comes to pass in congress.
So, in theory, the same amount of resources are spent for a traffic law or tax law as one of these bills.
As with any other project, each of these proposals must have legal expert hearings and are sent to be published in the official Gazette. Anyone else see the waste of money here?
While the declaration of these celebrations are merely symbolic recognition and do not required a paid holiday, they still need to be discussed in committee, subjected to technical questions, and eventually voted for in the Legislative Assembly, all of which takes time and money from the state.
To date, the calendar of the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) has nine days mandatory payment holidays, two holidays where payment not required and 56 days to commemorate something or someone. So pretty much 1.5 days a week dedicated to commemorate something or someone.
I just have 4 words…..Only in Costa Rica.

Texas had like 23 days of holiday currently 14 days all agencies. Now you add in some religious holidays it climbs 3 more..then there is things like Confederates Heroes day, LBJ birthday, San Jacintos day and so on .When I worked for them they said I should have put in religion preference as Jewish I said why? You get those holidays off as well. So Costa Rica 52 weeks with every Friday =52 days off form some sort of holiday. Pura Vida.
Wonder=think=rationalize. Wrong country.
